The story behind the "Lady with a fan in a Pollock dress"
The main idea for this painting was to embrace the principles of Maximalism in an artwork as a study of the style, but as always the artistic mind turns the piece into a strong curated emotional piece.
Let me give you a brief explanation of what Maximalism is; it is an attractive, artistic style that celebrates bold colors, intricate textures, and rich patterns, excess, abundance, and bold choices. It acts as the contrary of minimalism. Its main characteristics are the use of vibrant color, layers and textures, bold patterns, and fusion of styles, that create an organized visual chaos.
A Maximalist painting is an individual's curated self-expression

The Conceptual substance
Historically, a fan in portraiture could denote status, mystery, or gesture. In this painting, the fan in the left hand demonstrates an invitation to talk if you dare, the gesture of holding the hip is the availability for the interaction.
The turned back is challenging the spectator with self determination of visibility. The subject decides how and whether to be seen.
The two braids represent balance, harmony in a chaotic world.
Her energy is internalized but she lets it show by wearing the “Pollock dress”, which suggests not just a visual tribute to abstract expressionism but a psychological layering becoming an extension of internal emotions emanating power very silently. The Lady's strength lies in her autonomy, communicating her intention: I'm not merging with the world, I stand apart.
This work leans into eclecticism, combining figurative suggestion (the lady with her fan) with abstract expressionist references (the “Pollock dress”). The Pollock reference is more conceptual than literal, implying an embrace of gestural, spontaneous mark-making in the dress depiction.
The technical side of "Lady with a fan in a Pollock dress".
Its visual identity embraces maximalist principles, emphasizing the “more is more with intention.” The energetic assembly of layered patterns, bold color contrasts, and visual density that pushes beyond minimal restraint into expressive abundance. The canvas bursts with vibrant, saturated hues—blues and purples clash with yellows, creating high tension and visual rhythms that excite the eye. Cryptic text in the background is barely noticeable and layered markings provide both visual texture and narrative complexity. Using different mediums— such as acrylic pens, colored pencils, and acrylic paint— to achieve the final, finished composition of the painting.
This technique invites extended viewing as the eye navigates the surface’s depth. In Maximalism, the composition deliberately fills the canvas, dismantling negative space. This creates a sensory intensity that can be both overwhelming and delightful.

Lady with a Fan in a Pollock Dress is a visually rich, maximalist composition that blends high chromatic colors, saturated textures, patterns, and art historical allusion into a contemporary statement. It invites the viewer to find narrative within complexity while also challenging the traditional portraiture. It makes it a compelling example of how personal expression and eclectic references can coexist on a contemporary canvas.
