The Grit Behind the art
Drawing from my own experience, I am sharing the story of when I embarked on my art career in 1996. At that time, I believed that creating large artworks would be a defining feature of my artistic journey.
After completing my bachelor's degree and entering the working world, I began my career as a graphic artist for a rather dull press and, in my own time, I created custom art pieces such as sculptures, metal furniture, and designed wrought iron gates and even a macaw cage the size of and elevator. As well as decorated events and painted glassware.
Upon relocating to Miami, I started crafting jewelry and hair accessories to sell online, along with creating string art, painting signs, and making jewelry displays. I also worked in children's photography sales. Despite my booth at a local fair resembling a flea market, I remained committed to my journey as a visual artist, showcasing determination and persistence. As a visual artist, the medium in front of me was of no consequence.
In this journey working with different mediums and concepts, I understood that my only mission in my artsy life was to bring beauty to the eyes of the spectators and to create unique artwork that connect to people. Which, in turn, made them want to acquire it because it brought them joy and connected with them on a spiritual emotional level.
Creating artwork can be both thrilling and daunting. The unease of imperfection looms at large, but it is in pushing past this feeling that true artistic brilliance emerges.
Often, the greatest masterpieces are born from the ashes of challenges. Rejections, criticism, and creative blocks are not roadblocks but stepping stones towards artistic growth. Embrace the difficulties, for they are the grit that polishes your skills and refines your artistic voice. Remember, the most exquisite flowers bloom from the most barren lands.
